BARGAT was founded in 2021 however germination of the thought began almost more than two decades back.
BARGAT is the result of a deep and enduring friendship that has spanned over two decades of two purpose driven girls with a belief that compassion, and support has the power to establish resilient, self-sufficient, and empowered communities.
Preety, hailing from Assam and Nagaland states in India, travelled to Rajasthan for her higher education at the Indian Institute of Health Management Research. Preety had been dreaming of giving back to the society since she was a teenager, and in this Institute she found her purpose. Here she also met Rajashree, a second-generation Malayali raised in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Bonding over shared cultural backgrounds and a desire to make a positive impact, they formed a strong connection. They believe that individuals can flourish even in the most challenging circumstances if they possess the determination to succeed and are surrounded by loved ones who believe in them. This belief is the core mission at BARGAT.
Preety had long harbored a deep-seated dream of establishing a community-based organization that would ingeniously pave the way for enhancing the lives of vulnerable communities in the northeastern region of India. When she shared her vision with Rajashree, they found common ground in their approaches to engage with local communities and invest in education, health, and livelihood. Their purpose was refined and got its depth from the valuable insights and academic expertise that they gained at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in the USA where they emphasised people centred approach to address equity gaps. This was further emphasised while working on various projects at the grassroots level in India, particularly with women and children.
Like the Bargad (banyan) tree, they envision BARGAT to be deeply ingrained in the culture, values, and ethos of the land, while adapting and nurturing ecosystems conducive to community thriving.
BARGAT symbolizes the gratitude Preety and Rajashree feel towards the individuals who supported them throughout their journeys. Through BARGAT they aim to extend this kindness to others in need, making a meaningful difference in their lives.
